History Made Chic
Located in the heart of the gorgeous and expansive Chesapeake Bay and only 40 miles from Washington, D.C. and Baltimore, Annapolis has long been known as “America’s Sailing Capital,” home of the United States Naval Academy, and as a destination for maritime adventure, colonial history, boutique shopping, niche dining, and quality entertainment. Three hundred and one years ago, Annapolis became a royal chartered city as designated by Queen Anne of Great Britain in 1708. Back then, Annapolis was a popular port town and merchant center. By the mid-1800s, the Naval Academy was founded (1845) and the maritime industry was fully invested in harvesting the riches of the Chesapeake Bay, such as succulent blue crabs, plump oysters, and delectable striped bass (known locally as rockfish). The seafood industry would thrive into the next century and these delicacies continue to be enjoyed at many of our fine restaurants. By virtue of its rich nautical history and prime location, Annapolis would develop into a sailors’ paradise in the latter half of the twentieth century—a tradition it proudly maintains.
Today Annapolis’ quaint but vibrant downtown Historic District is nestled between the waters of Spa Creek, College Creek, the Severn River, and the Chesapeake Bay. Its cobblestone sidewalks, narrow brick streets, and hidden gems remind visitors of Old World charm. Though you can literally walk in the footsteps of our forefathers, you’ll also enjoy a myriad of modern extravagances, such as fine dining and lodging, and hip character, as evidenced by fabulous shopping and lively nightlife.
And did we mention that Annapolis and Maryland are lacrosse hotbeds? During the 2009 MLL season, you’ll watch the world’s most brilliant lacrosse players, some of which hail from our hometown. Keep an eye on your team’s roster. You may be surprised by the number of alumni from our fine city and state.
